Wennesland: The humanitarian situation in Gaza is catastrophic and the international community must end the war
New York (ST)-The UN envoy to the Middle East Tor Wennesland indicated that the Middle East region has reached a bleak crossroads after a year of devastating and horrific Israeli war in Gaza Strip, which caused massive destruction and heavy losses, calling on the international community to take immediate action to change the dangerous path it is taking and end the war in Gaza.
In his briefing before the UN Security Council session yesterday to discuss the situation in the Middle East, Wennesland said: “The current conditions in Gaza Strip are among the worst we have witnessed during the entire war, and we do not expect them to improve,” describing the humanitarian situation with the beginning of winter as catastrophic.
The UN official warned of the continued unabated settlement expansion and continued Israeli incursions into Palestinian cities and refugee camps, in addition to the increasing levels of settler attacks on Palestinians and their property.
He said: “In the light of developments in Gaza and Israel’s passing of laws against UNRWA operations, I must issue an urgent warning that the institutional framework for supporting the Palestinian people and the Palestinian state is on the verge of collapse, threatening to plunge the occupied Palestinian territory into even greater chaos.”
