AFP reported that UNESCO wrote on its website that the monastery of St. Hilarion “Tal Um Amer” on the hills of the coast of Nuseirat is one of the oldest monasteries in the Middle East dating back to the fourth century.”
World Heritage Director Ilondo Lazzari explained that “the request was made by Palestine, which considers recourse to UNESCO as the only sanctuary to protect the site from destruction in the current circumstances”.
The UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict decided last December to include the St. Hilarion Monastery compound located in the south of the estuary of the Gaza Valley with” the Temporary Enhanced Protection “.
