Daraa-(ST)- With the aim of preserving the environment and vegetation, youth volunteer groups carried out afforestation campaigns in a number of rural areas of Daraa Governorate, in cooperation with the towns of Busra al-Sham, Jassim, Maaraba and Jamrin.
The head of the Busra al-Sham City Council, Suleiman al-Shahma, told SANA that the governorate in general has suffered during previous years from the effects of excessive logging and cutting of forest trees for commercial purposes, and this continuous depletion of vegetation has led to the deterioration of the natural environment calling for an increase in forest monitoring campaigns to protect the natural wealth.
Agricultural engineer Samer Al-Balkhi from the extension unit in Busra stressed the need to intensify afforestation campaigns, especially on the outskirts of cities and towns and their main streets, and to be strict in implementing environmental protection laws and supporting the local community in all areas with diverse forest trees.
Muhammad Al-Miqdad, the campaign official in the town of Maaraba, stated that more than two hundred Cypress, Eucalyptus and Chinaberry trees were planted on the town’s roads and in front of homes, while Sawsan Mahmoud expressed the role of youth in various service activities for community development.
