Geneva (ST): The United Nations called for urgent and decisive measures to be taken to avoid new tragedies regarding the sinking of boats loaded with migrants, after a boat sank off Greece, killing hundreds of people.
Federico Soda, director of emergencies at the International Organization for Migration, said in a joint statement issued by his organization and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, according to France Press Agency: “It is clear that the approach adopted with regard to the Mediterranean is not effective, as this sea is still the most dangerous migration route in the world, and the highest death rate is recorded,” stressing the need for countries to reach an agreement to bridge the gaps in terms of search and rescue operations, rapid disembarkation, and to secure regular and safe migration routes.
According to the Assistant High Commissioner in charge of international protection, Gillian Trigozo, given the increase in the movement of refugees and migrants in the Mediterranean, collective efforts, including increased coordination between all Mediterranean countries, solidarity and responsibility-sharing are necessary.
