Damascus (ST): The General Secretariat of the General Union of Arab Writers and Writers condemned in the strongest terms the burning of a copy of the Holy Qur’an by affiliates of groups that hide behind freedom of opinion and expression in Sweden.
The General Secretariat, which is composed of the heads of 18 Arab cultural, intellectual and creative bodies, expressed in a statement its deep dissatisfaction with this barbaric and extremist behavior that contradicts all international laws and conventions, which stipulate the need to adhere to respecting the sanctities of peoples, their beliefs and religions, explaining that this outrageous behavior is a flagrant provocation to the feelings of hundreds of millions of Muslims all over the world.
The General Secretariat called for the need to enact international legislation to prevent insulting the religious sanctities of nations and peoples.
The Secretary-General of the Federation, Dr. Alaa Abdel-Hadi, affirmed that these extremist acts will not yield results other than provoking feelings of hatred, undermining stability, and creating artificial enmities among peoples.
The Union of Arab Writers in Syria also condemned this crime, which would feed extremist terrorist ideology, stressing that what happened in Stockholm, on the first day of Eid al-Adha, is a crime that contradicts the call for respect for the religious freedoms of nations and peoples in the world.
