The changing face of Barbie

Although Barbie’s slim but pneumatic figure has hardly changed since the doll first landed on shelves in 1959, it’s a completely different story when it comes to her face.

The original doll, was pale with heavy-lidded eyes and a curly cropped fringe but she’s undergone a complete makeover to become the glossy-haired icon we know today.

Barbie’s looks have been tweaked over the years to reflect changing beauty ideals, from heavy eyeliner and bouffant bobs in the Sixties to almond-shaped eyes in the Noughties.

In the Sixties, her lips became rounder and she had softer makeup, although her heavy lids remained and she had much shorter hairstyles than she’s now known for

When Barbie first arrived on the scene, created and marketed by Mattel, she was inspired by a doll which already existed in Germany.

Barbie had heavy lids and pursed lips but as the Sixties came, her lips became rounder and her makeup softened.
