Few days ago, the world marked the 66th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which was adopted by the UN General Assembly on December 10th, 1948 as to supposedly guarantee the rights of every individual everywhere.
The anniversary was observed while the armed terrorist groups in Syria were still committing horrible crimes and serious violations of human rights against the Syrians depriving them even from the right to live or feel safe, yet the international community keeps silent and some foreign and Arab countries continue to support terrorism in the country turning the Syrians’ lives into a nightmare.
On this occasion, the Syrians question the credibility of the international organizations and associations which claim they are protecting human rights in the world yet ignore the atrocities being perpetrated by the foreign-backed terrorists who came to Syria from more than 80 countries as to fight the Syrian state, displace and kill the Syrians, destroy properties, schools, universities, factories and hospitals and violate the religious, cultural and social rights and freedoms of the Syrian citizens.
Early civil legislations and religions, which have called for the protection of human rights, emerged in Syria thousands of years ago. They aimed to disseminate the moral values and the principles of peace in the whole world. These historical principles and values are now being attacked and violated in Syria by the takfiri narrow-minded terrorists who kill in public all who differ with them.
Najmuddin Shamdeen, member of the People’s Assembly, believes that “Syria is facing a heinous conspiracy and a terrorist aggression launched by takfiri groups and backed by the United States and its agents in the West and the region in a blatant violation of international agreements, conventions and human values.”
He said the Syrian constitution, which included all the rights provided in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, affirmed that the citizens were equal in rights and duties regardless their belongingness, religion or cultural identity. However, some countries are trying to feed sedition, weaken the Syrian society, and create chaos as to provoke foreign interference in the county’s internal affairs.
According to Shamdeen, Syria was among the first countries which signed the agreements and conventions which guarantee the protection of children and women’s rights and which call for the elimination of all forms of violence and discrimination against women and the disabled. Besides, the recruitment of children in fighting in addition to human trafficking are also criminalized according to the Syrian laws.
But, Shamdeen went on to say, these conventions and agreements are blatantly violated by the armed groups, which commit horrible crimes against children and women in Syria amid the deadly silence of the international community.
On the Universal Day of Human Rights, the world is demanded to pressure terrorism sponsoring countries to stop providing all forms of support to the terrorists. It is also demanded to act against the countries which have imposed unjust economic siege on the Syrian people.
