Russian experts stress the importance of resuming Syria’s participation in the meetings of the Arab League Council
A number of Russian experts specialized in Arab and Islamic issues stressed during a round table, held by the Russian Novosti Agency today, the importance of resuming Syria’s participation in the meetings of the Council of the League of Arab States.
The deputy head of the Council of the Russian Diplomats Association, Ambassador Andrey Baklanov, affirmed during the opening of the round table meeting that the resumption of Syria’s participation in the meetings of the Council of the League of Arab States is very important, noting the stability of the principled Russian position towards combating international terrorism in Syria since the outbreak of the crisis until today.
Baklanov said, “This return also indicates that sometimes the majority is not right, while the minority can be right, just as Syria was unique in fighting terrorism,” pointing to the courage that Syria showed as a people and leadership in adhering to a firm principled position and flexible diplomacy.
Baklanov pointed out that many of the UN resolutions on Syria have become useless and sterile by statute of limitations, but it is difficult to change them. Therefore, Russia must rely on objective assessments of regional and international developments on Syria and in cooperation with the countries of the region, stressing that the Russian position on the Syrian track has proven its correctness and merit.
Baklanov pointed out that President Bashar al-Assad’s firm stance stems from the interest of his country and people, considering that the return of Syria to the Arab ranks is a victory for Russian-Syrian cooperation on the diplomatic front, and that this return will contribute to resolving economic issues in Syria and the return of the displaced to their homes.
In turn, the senior scientific researcher at the Center for Arab and Islamic Studies at the Institute of Orientalism of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Igor Matveyev, considered that the League of Arab States returned to Syria and not the other way around. The Russian researcher indicated that all the accusations against Syria seem to fail in the face of the objective reality that has finally appeared to everyone in the Arab and Western media as well, with the help of allies and friends of Syria and some Arab countries.
For his part, Nikolay Surkov, a senior researcher at the Primakov Center for Middle Eastern Studies at the Institute of International Economic and International Relations, considered that Syria’s return to the League of Arab States came as a result of the Arab need to solve intractable issues in the Arab region and elsewhere, which cannot be overcome without Syrian participation.
Surkov considered that Western sanctions increase the difficulties of resolving economic issues in Syria, so these sanctions must be removed with a unified Arab position, stressing that Syria’s return to the League of Arab States is a victory for Syrian diplomacy, and this must be completed by resolving the economic suffering in Syria.
