The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea today criticized the United States for ratifying a deal to sell “Apache” attack helicopters to South Korea, calling this act a provocative act deliberately aimed at further destabilizing security in the region.
“After the United States announced last week a decision to approve the proposed sale of 36 Apache AH-64E attack helicopters to South Korea, we confirm that this is a irresponsible provocative act deliberately aimed at further destabilizing security in the region, “an official of the DPRK Foreign Ministry said in a statement today, according to the Korean Central News Agency.
“By supplying its allies with lethal weapons, Washington is escalating the military confrontation, disturbing the military balance, and thereby increasing the risk of a new conflict in the region,” the statement said.
The statement pointed out that the United States is now more active in selling weapons to Japan, South Korea and other allies in the Asia-Pacific region, and this poses a challenge to security in the region that cannot be ignored.
“Given the United States ‘ keenness to provide military equipment and lethal equipment to its allies in the region, the DPRK’s strategic deterrence will be further strengthened to protect national security, interests and regional peace,” the statement concluded.
