DAMASCUS, (ST)-President Bashar Al-Assad on Monday issued Legislative Decree No. 2 for the year 2015 providing for the establishment of a university in the city of Tartous called “Tartous Univesity”.
The new university will consist of the faculties of medicine, economy, arts and humanities, pharmacy, technical engineering, communications and information technology, tourism and science.
The decree takes effect from the beginning of study year 2015-2016.
In a statement to SANA, Minister of Higher Education Mohammad Amer al-Mardini stressed that establishing a university in Tartous is a qualitative development in the higher education system in Syria and it is a step preparing for establishing other universities in the rest of the Syrian provinces to serve the education process in the country.
“The infrastructure is available in the city as there are nine faculties already operating in Tartous,” the minister added.
On his part, Safwan Abou Sa’da, Tartous Governor said the establishment of a university in Tartous saves the students’ time and effort and reduces expenses.
Rector of the Tishreen University branch in Tartous Mousa al-Mohammad stressed that establishing the university will activate economic and social life in the province.
The decree is considered as an important step to enhance and support education against takfiri thinking.
