Namibia confirms its support for the decision of the ICJ regarding the illegality of the Israeli occupation presence in the occupied Palestinian territories

Windhoek, (ST) – Namibia welcomed the decision of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) issued on the 19th of this month regarding the legal consequences of the policies and practices of the Israeli occupation entity in the occupied Palestinian territories, including the city of East Al- Quds (Jerusalem).

In its decision, the court affirmed that the Israeli occupation and its associated policies are illegal, discriminatory, and violate the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination.

The Windhoek Observer website quoted Namibian Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Pia Muchelenga as saying in a statement yesterday: Namibia remains fully committed to the inalienable right of the Palestinian people to self-determination. It added: We in Namibia commend the International Court of Justice for conducting a comprehensive and detailed examination of the facts. We urge the international community to support the rights of the Palestinian people and work to establish peace in the region.

Muchelenga stressed that Namibia’s unique position on this issue is driven by its own historical experience in the face of racial discrimination, oppression and apartheid. He confirms Namibia’s belief in the role of the ICJ in establishing a secure legal basis for a lasting political settlement of the Palestinian issue and its broader commitment to justice, equality and human justice.

The Namibian official called on the international community to use the UN General Assembly and the UN Security Council to ensure compliance and immediate implementation of the International Court of Justice decision.
