MOSCOW, June 1, (ST)- Russia has informed the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) of potential chemical provocations on the part of Ukraine’s armed forces in the Donbass republics, a Russian envoy said during an on-air broadcast of the Rossiya-24 television channel on Wednesday.
“In all, we have recently submitted 12 verbal notes [to the OPCW], reporting in detail about the locations of potential chemical provocations and the methods Ukrainian nationals could resort to under a false flag,” Russia’s envoy to the OPCW, Alexander Shulgin, said, adding that potential explosions, in particular in the so-called chemical industry triangle, could later be attributed to Russia.
The OPCW’s Technical Secretariat is studying the information provided by Russia and is preparing a response, Shulgin said. “We demand that our notes be immediately distributed among the member-countries,” he said. Apart from presenting notes, Russia has been making telephone calls to the countries involved.
The Russian envoy said Moscow was getting proactive, and “Ukrainian nationalists may now think twice whether they should proceed with their plans”.
