Al-Ward al-Shamiya (the Damascene Rose) fields cover an area of 300 hectares in the Nabek area of Damascus countryside, 2 hectares in the eastern Ghouta region and 1.5 hectares in the Al-Tall area. The total number of Al-Ward al-Shamiya bushes is 146 thousand and the number of Planters is 368.
In a statement to SANA correspondent, the director of Agriculture in Rural Damascus Governorate, Eng. Irfan Ziadeh, explained that the yield per hectare is 200 kilograms of roses with an estimated production of up to 73 tons of fresh roses, and about 24 thousand kilograms of dry roses.
The total reclaimed area during the current season amounts to 122 hectares, which will be fully planted with Al-Ward al-Shamiya, noting that 500 hectares were reclaimed last year, benefiting about 690 farmers.
He confirmed that support is provided for the cultivation of the al-Shamiya rose by securing saplings for farmers and renovating the old unproductive fields in the province, pointing out that the al-Shamiya Rose Society affiliated to the Syrian Secretariat for Development received 30 thousand transplants from the nurseries of the Ministry of Agriculture through the Farmers ‘ Union .These we’re distributed in al-Qastal, Yabrud and Al-Merah , as opposed 8,000 plants distributed free of charge last year in Al-Tall and Yabrud.
