DAMASCUS, (ST) – The Regional Director of Hover Migratory Birds Project Osama Al-Nouri said that there are economic dimensions of international migratory birds as types through the integration of these birds to become a component of the tourism and environmen product.
“Syria’s geographical location is the second most important path for migratory birds in the world which means that there is an opportunity to maximize the economic benefits of the tourism sector through enriching this product with this new dimension,” Mr. al -Nouri said in a statement.
In the same context, the Director of Biodiversity,Territories and Pastures at the Ministry of Environment Eng. Bilal al -Hayek explained that some 1.5 million birds are visiting Syria, including 37 species birds of prey and some of them place the eggs and pursue their journey, including the endangered species like an eagle and the Egyptian vulture as well as 19 species of birds threatened with extinction are registered on the international red list.
“We, in Syria, seek to put our own red list of animals and plants,” Mr. al -Hayek clarified.
“International efforts are exerted for the protection of biodiversity and to develop the necessary plans for the conservation of endangered species and there is a plan of action that will be discussed next year in Bulgaria for the protection of the Egyptian vulture, and Syria has been invited to this meeting,” he added.
