Moscow, (ST) – Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov renewed his country’s support for Syria’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence.
In a greeting message addressed by Lavrov to the organizers and guests of a roundtable held on Tuesday by the Diplomatic Academy of the Russian Foreign Ministry and the Syrian Embassy in Moscow on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, he said: The rich history of relations between Moscow and Damascus clearly demonstrates that the Soviet Union and later the Russian Federation have always supported the sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of the Syrian Arab Republic.
He stressed Russia’s firm adherence to its positions supporting the right of the Syrian people to decide their fate themselves without any external interference, as stipulated in the UN Security Council resolutions.
Lavrov pointed out that Moscow and Damascus are closely coordinating their steps in the current stage of the development of bilateral relations on all the basic issues on the international agenda.
He also stressed the importance of this mutual support in the light of the current complicated geopolitical circumstances.
The Russian Foreign Minister noted the importance of this event, which was organized today, in “strengthening friendship and trust between the Russian and Syrian peoples.
He referred that among the participants are experts who have done a lot to consolidate Russian-Syrian cooperation as well as to overcome the crisis in friendly Syria.
