Kharita at “COP 29”: The need to increase funding for countries to fulfill their obligations

Baku (ST) – The work of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change “COP 29” continued yesterday in the Azerbaijani capital, Baku, with the participation of a Syrian delegation headed by Minister of Local Administration and Environment, Eng. Louay Kharita.

During the high-level ministerial plenary session yesterday, Minister Kharita stressed the need to increase funding, and for countries and major and industrial companies to fulfill their obligations and provide resources to climate funds and provide the opportunity for all developing countries affected by climate change to benefit from them.

Kharita pointed to the suffering of the Syrian environment from the effects of climate change on the environment and economic and social life, in addition to the practices of the Turkish, American and Zionist occupation that cause environmental deterioration, as well as the unilateral coercive measures imposed on the Syrian people.

Kharita stressed that despite terrorism, occupation and unilateral coercive measures, the Syrian government continued to work on environmental protection measures, confronting climate change, and integrating the environmental dimension into development, recovery and reconstruction plans, and has committed and continues to commit to the international environmental agreements it has joined.

Kharita also praised the efforts of the UN and international bodies that provide technical and financial support to contribute to preserving the safety of the environment and human health and confronting the effects of climate change.

At the end of his speech, Kharita indicated that Syria is not one of the countries contributing to the emissions that led to climate change, but it is one of the countries most affected by climate change, and the developed and industrialized countries that caused these climate changes must assume their responsibility in terms of supporting climate funds by providing mitigation and adaptation projects in a way that preserves the environment to achieve the most important condition of sustainability.
