Integrated Plan to Address Environmental Challenges

DAMASCUS, (ST) – The Minister of State for Environmental Affairs, Dr. Nazira Sarkis, underlined that the ministry is working in cooperation with the concerned ministries to implement a national strategy for environmental awareness through the development of an integrated plan to address the environmental challenges facing   Syria.

During the meeting of the National Committee to raise environmental awareness held recently here,  the Minister noted the need to promote the community participation in the conservation of the environment and environmental challenges, stressing the need for cooperation and coordination among all concerned bodies to familiarize citizens with environmental problems, their causes and how to reduce them, treatment and promotion of positive behavior for the protection of the environment and conservation of natural resources.

Dr. Sarkis pointed to the importance of the role of mass media to raise awareness about environmental issues and problems facing Syria and the negative consequences of these problems in the future on humans and environment.

Eng. Yousef Kurdi from the Directorate of Environmental Awareness at the Ministry of Environment presented a plan and some ideas to promote environmental awareness. The participants in the meeting discussed the terms of the proposed plan and purposes, and the time required to be implemented.

It is worth mentioning that the Ministry of State for Environmental Affairs reshaped the National Committee to raise environmental awareness in order to promote environmental awareness and the work to ensure the sustainability of natural resources with the participation of representatives of all concerned bodies at the state level, the private sector and representatives of people’s organizations, vocational associations and institutions of the Ministry of Information, environmental and NGOs, Damascus and Damascus countryside Chambers of Industry and Commerce and its, Damascus Chamber of Agriculture and the Syrian Arab Red Crescent Organization and Syria Trust for Development.
