Guterres: The UN is no longer the center of everything and regional organizations are necessary to resolve pressing issues

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stressed that the international organization he presides over  is no longer the center of everything, as the problems have become more complex and the situation has become more difficult, pointing out that the ability of regional organizations is necessary to resolve issues.

Guterres explained in an exclusive interview with TASS that” the UN secretary-general has very little authority in it. He has few financial resources at his disposal… But he has a voice that can only be important when he is faithful to the UN Charter and international law and serves the underprivileged in this world.”

Guterres expressed dissatisfaction with his work and the work of the International Organization, adding: “We have to do a much better job of bringing peace, which has disappeared from the ground as a result of geopolitical disagreements and the balance of power that has become less clear than before… Favorable economic and social conditions must be created in the field of human rights”.

Speaking about the reform of the UN Security Council, Guterres pointed to the need to provide at least one permanent seat for Africa in this council, and the need for more developing countries to be in it, pointing out that the Soviet Union in the past and Russia Today were very necessary for the formation of the United Nations, and they are considered one of the basic components of the organization’s work.

“I don’t think the United Nations is the center of everything “. I am more and more convinced that the capacity of regional organizations is necessary to solve problems,” he said, pointing out that organizations such as the BRICS, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, the African Union or the Organization of Islamic Cooperation have an important role in international life and are considered key partners of the United Nations.
