Damascus-International Junior Chamber organized a walk in Old Damascus on the occasion of World Environment Day
With the support of the Damascus Governorate and the General Directorate of Antiquities and Museums GDAM , the International Junior Chamber JCI in Damascus , the “Syrian Climate Leaders” Foundation, in cooperation with the New Career Path for Training and Employment Company, organized “Al-Dar Al-Musqiya” “The Irrigated House” walk in Old Damascus on the occasion of World Environment Day.
The walk aimed to spread awareness about the importance of preserving the environment, and to introduce the history of the oldest inhabited city , Damascus.
The director of the event, who is a member of the Damascus- JCI Muhammad Khair Hanno, said in a statement to SANA: “The Walk included various activities in the field of environment and a voluntary agricultural activity, where we cleaned and sorted waste and planted rose, jasmine, and orange seedlings in several areas of Old Damascus”
He added that introductory sessions about local heritage were held as the participants exchanged information about the history of Damascus.
Hanno explained that the reason for choosing the title of the walk , “The Irrigated House,” is because it is one of the names that was given to the city of Damascus, due to the abundance of water in it because of its geographical location in a fertile plain irrigated by the Barada River and its many branches.
He indicated t6hat the number of the participants in the walk reached about one hundred.
Regarding the importance of focusing on projects related to the issue of climate change, the local president of the JCI Sineen Al-Sabagh, said: “ we direct our attention to the environment in light of the global climate challenge and the necessity of preserving our planet healthy and clean, through tireless efforts and cooperation with the local community, which was demonstrated by our cooperation In this event that combined environment and heritage.”
It is noteworthy that June the 5th is World Environment Day, which has been supervised by the United Nations Environment Program since 1973. This year, World Environment Day focuses on the topic of land reclamation, desertification, and the ability to adapt to drought, under the slogan “Our land is our future… together we restore our planet.”
