About two thousand titles were included in the book exhibition, which was opened by the branch of the Arab Writers Union, the Teachers Union, and the Directorate of Education in Suwayda today, in cooperation with a group of cultural and civil personalities at the Martyr Ghaleb Al-Aissami Vocational Secondary School in the city of Salkhad.
The exhibition, held on the occasion of World Book Day and continuing until the thirtieth of this month, contains various titles of literary, historical, philosophical, studies, and children’s books, at discounts and nominal prices, according to those in charge of it.
Wijdan Abu Mahmoud, head of the Arab Writers Union branch in Suwayda, said in a statement to SANA correspondent today that the exhibition is consistent with the cultural situation that encourages reading in Salkhad and the awareness of the local community there to hold exhibitions. It included various publications of the Writers Union with discounts that reached about 60 percent of the price of books, in addition to the participation of a number of publishing houses to encourage the spread of book culture and its acquisition.
The Director of Education in Suwayda, Akram Al-Hasaniyeh, pointed out in a similar statement that the exhibition is consistent with the Ministry of Education’s plan to encourage reading, hold exhibitions, and spreading book culture, noting the role of the local community in its success.
Khaled Abu Fakhr, a member of the branch office of the Teachers Union, underlined the importance of holding book fairs within schools to encourage the new generation to read, expand its scope to the countryside, and not limit it to governorate centers only.
Head of the Libraries Division in the Education Directorate, Marwa Al-Khatib, stated that during the exhibition, a portion of the book proceeds was allocated to support the school library in the governorate. Suwayda Chamber of Commerce and Industry also provided a financial sum to support the purchase of books for libraries in Salkhad region.
During the opening of the exhibition, citizen Asad Al-Jawhari was honored for his role in establishing a library and placing it at the service of those interested in reading. A number of supervisors of rural libraries in Salkhad region were also honored in appreciation of their efforts.
