Cairo, (ST) – The Arab League called on the United States and the European Union to act strongly to save the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) and prevent the Israeli occupation from implementing its plan to undermine it.
Wafa News Agency quoted the spokesman for the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Jamal Rushdi, as saying in a statement today: “The Secretary-General of the League Ahmed Aboul Gheit, called in two letters he sent to US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, to save UNRWA and prevent the implementation of the occupation’s plan to completely undermine it with the aim of emptying the refugee issue of its content.
He indicated that UNRWA constitutes a pillar of stability not only in Palestine but in the entire region, and that saving it is a moral and strategic necessity, and dismantling it, if it happens, will represent a dangerous precedent on the international level.
Rushdi stressed that the two letters addressed the law recently issued by the occupation authorities banning UNRWA’s work as they included a detailed warning of the dangers of undermining its work in the Palestinian territories.
The two letters noted that the occupation’s new laws threaten with the complete collapse of the humanitarian response system in Gaza at a time when the population is living on the brink of famine.
