An environmental walk and planting trees in Damascus as part of the National Environment Day celebrations
On November 2nd, the Governorate of Damascus organized an environmental march from Khaled Bin Al-Walid Street to the Citadel of Damascus, within the activities of the National Environment Day.
The activities were held under the title “Our Environment is Our Safety .Our Forest is Our Responsibility” and olive and orange trees were planted in the Mawazine Park behind the Damascus Al-Mujitahad Hospital.
The popular organizations, unions, professional unions, civil associations, volunteer teams and directorates from the Governorate, participated in the march which aimed at spreading awareness regarding people’s responsibility towards the environment and its preservation and hygiene.
The Director of the Environment Directorate in Damascus Governorate, Eng. Wade’a Juha, referred to the importance of community participation in maintaining the cleanliness of streets and public parks and planting trees that contribute to purifying the cities ’air.
Juha called for raising the level of environmental awareness among community members and introducing the dangers to the environment and the methods to preserve it.
For his part, Bashir Al-Hamwi, a member of the Command of the Revolutionary Youth Union branch in Damascus, said that the participation in the event comes as an emphasis on the importance of protecting and preserving the environment and spreading awareness.
Wafa Al-Amouri a participant from the Amarha ( Build) Volunteer Team stressed the need to increase green spaces in the city and awareness campaigns to preserve the environment and clean cities, especially in schools and universities.
Member of the Board of Directors of the Syrian Society for the Environment Taghreed Mufreh indicated the importance of cooperation between the civil society and the government to preserve the environment.
On November 1, the Governorate of Damascus organized an afforestation campaign on the Southern Ring Road as part of the activities of the National Environment Day.
