Al-Mikdad to Lazzarini: The role of UNRWA is important in meeting the needs of the Palestinian refugees
Dr. Faisal Al-Mikdad, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, during his meeting today with the Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, and the accompanying delegation, stressed the growing importance of UNRWA’s role in securing the needs of Palestinian refugees.
Al-Mikdad noted the importance of the continuous visits of UN officials to Syria to obtain a clearer vision of the impact of the inhumane unilateral economic sanctions on the Syrian people and Palestinian refugees, especially after the devastating earthquake that hit Syria.
Al-Mikdad pointed out that the politicized dealings of some countries, which claim to care for the Syrian and Palestinian people, with the devastating earthquake that struck Syria, shows that they are the countries that stand in the way of resolving the Palestinian issue and the return of Palestinian refugees to their homeland, warning that prolonging the crisis reduces confidence of the peoples and states in international organizations.
In turn, Lazzarini thanked the Syrian government for the great support it provides to UNRWA’s work in Syria, which recently resulted in the rehabilitation of the Yarmouk camp, and the return of the people and life to it, in addition to the Syrian government’s continuous support to the Palestinian refugees all over the Syrian territory, especially after the catastrophe of the earthquake that struck some Syrian governorates on the 6th of last February.
