Syria elected as member of the International Standards Committee for the International Plant Protection Convention

On July 19th, the Secretariat of the International Convention on the Protection of Plants has chosen Syria as member of the International Standards Committee for the International Plant Protection Convention (IIPC) of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization.

The director of plant protection at the Ministry of Agriculture, Dr. Iyad Mohamed, stated that this came based on the leading role that Syria plays in the field of plant health and exchanging experiences with the international community in this field.

He added: The International Plant Protection Convention chose the Director of Plant Protection in the Ministry of Agriculture, Dr. Iyad Mohamed, as a member of the International Standards Committee for the Convention, representing the Near East and North Africa region, which includes all Arab countries, the Gulf states, Iran, the Middle East and North Africa.

He pointed out that the permanent committee consists of 25 members from each of the seven FAO regions responsible for decisive decisions that constitute and improve the IPPC, and the decisions made by these bodies can affect national food security, health and biological diversity of all environmental systems, and trade.

He said: The International Standards Committee has an active role in adopting new plant health standards, as well as setting strategic plans and technical support for member states pursuant to the agreement.

The IPPC is an international treaty aimed at securing coordinated and effective work to prevent the entry and combat plant pests.
