Faculty of Journalism at Damascus University grants the first PhD degree in the Department of Electronic Media

Damascus, (ST) – The Faculty of Journalism at Damascus University granted the first PhD degree in the Department of Electronic Media for the student, Rola Samir.

Rola’s passion and follow-up on latest developments in the world of media methods as well as electronic and visual media prompted her to complete her academic achievement in postgraduate studies, to obtain the first PhD degree in Syria from the “electronic media” department.

Rola, a university graduate and a lecturer at her faculty, submitted a PhD thesis at the Faculty of Journalism to obtain a doctorate degree in electronic editing, explaining the right styles of news editing in Syrian websites and the impact of this style on understanding the content.

According to Rola, the letter dealt with important points related to editing errors that are made on Syrian websites, and provided explanations and suggestions that websites can benefit from, in order to avoid editorial errors.

During her interview with SANA, Rola said that the purpose of the study she presented was to develop editorial work, as it is the backbone of any media message. She added that the study included all the mistakes made during media editing.

She said that the method included in the study can be a reference for many other studies and research, and websites can view the study to learn how to develop journalistic work and the editing process in particular.

The supervisor of the thesis, Dr. Muhammad Al-Omar from the Faculty of  Journalism, pointed out that this thesis is the first PhD letter in the Department of Electronic Media at the University of Damascus.  “It is distinguished, because electronic media is a modern kind of media that doesn’t have many references which the press, radio and television have. Therefore, the researcher, Rola has faced some difficulties in securing the references.

Dr. Al-Omar affirmed that the thesis will be an important reference in the Faculty of Journalisn for electronic media and editing in general, and for the faculty’s library as well.

In 2017, the Council of Higher Education approved the creation of a Ph.D. in the Faculty of Journalism, which includes four departments: “radio, television, public relations, advertising, journalism, publishing, and electronic media.”
