HAMA (ST) – Hama Agriculture Directorate estimated the production of the fruits of walnut for the current agricultural season by about 1943 tons. Some 1159 tons production of trees planted in irrigated land and 784 tons in rain-fed land.
Head of the Economic and Agricultural Affairs Department in Hama, Mowafaq Najjar, said in a statement yesterday that the cultivation of walnut trees has received an overwhelming response from farmers due to increased domestic consumption of fruit and the vogue of its internal and external trade.
“The appropriate environment for the cultivation of walnut trees are especially wet areas valleys near the mouths of rivers and streams and irrigated fields and orchards, where are concentrated in the Orontes Basin and upland areas in Misyaf,” Mr. Najjar clarified.
It is noteworthy that the total number of walnut trees in Hama reaches 112 thousand fruitful trees of which 88 thousand trees planted on 608 hectares of which 280 hectares in irrigated land and 328 hectares in rain-fed land.
