BASMA Association has launched its annual campaign for supporting children with cancer and it will last until the end of this month.
The campaign is launched under the slogan ” Cancer does not wait, Be a Supporter to BASMA 2021″ and it aims to collect support for children with cancer through selling certain products from economic companies that support the association or collecting donations.
The number of children, who receive treatment and healthcare from BASMA reached 8400 until the end of 2020, according to the Executive Director of the association Rima Salem.
In September 2018 WHO announced a new effort – the WHO Global Initiative for Childhood Cancer – with the aim of reaching at least a 60% survival rate for children with cancer by 2030, thereby saving an additional one million lives. This new target represents a doubling of the global cure rate for children with cancer.
Cancer is a leading cause of death for children, with 300,000 new cases diagnosed each year among children aged 0-19 years. Children with cancer in low- and middle-income countries are four times more likely to die of the disease than children in high-income countries. This is because their illnesses are not diagnosed, they are often forced to abandon treatment due to high costs, and the health professionals entrusted with their care lack specialized training.
15th of February is International Childhood Cancer Day (ICCD).
BASMA is a volunteer NGO which started its work in 2006, It seeks to improve the health and social conditions of children with cancer in Syria , providing them and their families with financial, psychological and moral support during the treatment period as well as increasing community awareness on pediatric cancer.
