Muscat-(ST)_ With the participation of 73 Syrian publishing houses, the 28th Muscat International Book Fair opened yesterday, and will continue until the second of the March at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Center.
Syrian Ambassador to the Sultanate of Oman Idris Mayya said “Syria’s participation in this event is remarkable as it ranks fourth among the participating countries.” He noted the diversity of titles presented by Syrian publishing houses In the fields of culture, sociology, politics and history.
For his part, Iyad Hassan Director of Dar Al-Farqad for Publishing and Distribution in Syria, noted the facilities provided by the Omani side. He also pointed to the close relationship with the Omani public, indicating that there are more than 180 Omani books at Dar Al-Farqad.
Amina Salah El-Din from Tammuz Publishing House, indicated that their participation in the exhibition has continued since 2015, noting the exhibition’ distinction and the Omani people’s love for reading.
On the other hand Abd al-Rahman Dawla, owner of Dar al-Qalam in Damascus, stressed the importance of the Muscat International Book Fair as it contributes to promoting reading in the region, pointing out that e-books do not affect the sales of paper books.
Wael Qaddour from Dar Al Yamama in Syria said “the Muscat Exhibition remains one of the most prominent cultural events in the region,” pointing out that many readers prefer paper books over electronic ones.
And, Saeed Al-Zoubi from Dar Al-Fikr, explained that their participation in the exhibition has continued since its first session, and the publications are updated periodically to meet the aspirations of the public.
In his speech, the Omani Minister of Endowments and Religious Affairs, Dr. Muhammad bin Saeed Al-Maamari, confirmed the importance of the exhibition as a platform to promote the book as well as the publishing and cultural industry, pointing out that the same event has been renewed year after year since 1992.
In the same context, Undersecretary of the Omani Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth Saeed bin Sultan Al Busaidi indicated that The Muscat International Book Fair is a great opportunity to meet and exchange ideas and cultural dialogues, and it also hosts an elite group of prominent intellectuals and media figures, and is considered a prominent cultural platform.
