Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) Philippe Lazzarini renewed their call for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement today: “Lavrov and Lazzarini discussed on the sidelines of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly in New York the extremely critical situation in the Middle East region, with a focus on the tasks of dealing with the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip.”
The Foreign Ministry continued: “The main role of UNRWA in providing comprehensive assistance and support to the Palestinians, both in the occupied Palestinian territories and in neighboring Arab countries, was noted, and the need to preserve the agency’s mandate to ensure the fundamental right of refugees and their descendants to return was emphasized.”
The two sides stressed the need for an immediate ceasefire everywhere, and above all in Gaza Strip, as a necessary condition for arranging the stable and safe delivery of humanitarian aid to those affected and in need, and relaunching the peace process on the basis of known international references.
