On July 12, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Russian-American relations are still at their lowest level.
“Our relationship with the United States is still almost at the lowest point, and things are very bad at the level of bilateral relations in the context of our countries’ responsibility for international affairs, especially with regard to the issue of arms control and strategic stability,” Peskov said in a statement to Russia 1 Channel.
Peskov said: “ the contacts between the two countries at the expert level do not bring us closer to preserve these agreements, especially the Treaty on the Limitation of Strategic Assault Weapons, and these documents are still the only ones that can guarantee control of weapons in the global scope.”
Russia has repeatedly stressed its willingness to extend the Strategic Offensive Weapon Reduction Treaty with the United States. The administration of President Donald Trump has not expressed a desire to do so while calling for negotiations on a broader tripartite nuclear arms deal that includes China.
