Takht Ravanchi: Some governments abuse the powers of the UN Security Council

New York (ST): Iran’s representative to the United Nations, Majid Takht Ravanchi, criticized some governments for repeatedly exploiting the powers and responsibilities of the UN Security Council for the benefit of their own goals.

During a meeting of the UN Security Council held yesterday on reforming the council and improving its working methods, Takht Ravanchi stressed the need to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the Security Council in light of the changing nature and scope of challenges related to international peace and security. The decision and that this matter will also help the Council to prevent the abuse or excessive use of the measures stipulated in Chapter VII of the Charter.

Takht Ravanchi affirmed that reforming and transforming the council into a fully transparent institution governed by the rule of law and subject to accountability is the most effective way to ensure its transparency, effectiveness and impact, pointing to the importance of pluralism in resolving international crises and challenges.
