Russian State Duma ratifies strategic partnership agreement between Russia and DPRK

Speaker of the Russian State Duma Committee on International Affairs Leonid Slutsky announced that the Council ratified the agreement between the Russian Federation and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea concluded in Pyongyang on June 19, 2024, in order to deepen the partnership and strategic interaction in a wide range of areas.

Slutsky said in a statement to reporters today: “The agreement fully takes into account the current geopolitical situation and transfers relations between Russia and the DPRK to a new level of alliance. This is the basis for expanding cooperation in all areas of interaction and the basis for a comprehensive strategic partnership between Moscow and Pyongyang based on the principles of mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, and non-interference in internal affairs.”

The Russian parliamentarian pointed to “the peaceful and defensive nature of the provisions of the treaty, which are in no way directed against third countries and do not provide for military alliances, unlike Western agreements,” adding: “Its ratification will also help establish stability and balance in the Asia-Pacific region and Northeast Asia, taking into account the situation on the Korean Peninsula.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin submitted the text of the treaty to the Russian Duma for ratification on October 14.
