Moscow: We refuse to turn the WHO into a platform for settling political calculations

Russia has condemned the ongoing American attempts to destroy the World Health Organization.

On May 19 , the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, shed light on the American attempts which aimed at destroying the World Health Organization( WHO) and threatening to stop its funding permanently.

Ryabkov said: “ Yes, there are possibilities for improvement and calls for reform. We deal with these calls responsibly and constructivelyand we are ready, as before, to participate extensively in this regard.”

Ryabkov said that Moscow refuses to politicize everything related to the epidemic of the Coronavirus and weaken the World Health Organization and turn it into a platform for settling political calculations.

For his part, Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations Office and Other International Organizations in Geneva Ambassador Gennady Gatilovannounced that Russia views negatively at the threats of US President Donald Trump to the World Health Organization(WHO).

During an e-conference organized by the Valdai International Club for Discussion, Gatilov stressed that the majority of the international community believes that the World Health Organization is the responsibleorganization that should coordinate the health activities of countries.

Gatilov added that Washington’s attacks on the World Health Organization are simply unsuccessful.

US President Donald Trump announced mid-last month that he had ordered his administration to suspend the payment of the financial contribution to the World Health Organization because of what he called the ‘mismanagement’ of the United Nations for the emerging crisis of the Corona virus.

On the other hand, Russia was elected as member of the Executive Board of the World Health Organization for a period of three years, according to a decision taken during a session held on May 19 without a vote.

The other nine elected member countries are Britain, Botswana, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, India, Colombia, Madagascar, Oman and South Korea, according to the Russian News Agency(TASS).
