A course in the restoration of archaeological pottery for students of the Department of Archeology in Al-Suwayda
In the technical lab of Al-Suwayda Department of Antiquities, a course began in the restoration of archaeological pottery for a number of students of the Archeology Department at the Second College of Arts and Humanities at the Damascus University in Al-Suwayda branch.
The course, which is held in cooperation with the two branches of Damascus University in Al-Suwayda and the National Union of Syrian Students in the governorate, will be attended by 25 students.
Dr. Nashaat Kiwan, head of the Al-Suwayda Department of Antiquities told SANA “This course is held under the supervision of specialists and lasts for a week and aims to link the theoretical side with the practical side, qualify students and graduates of the Archeology Department, and raise their scientific and technical competence in restoring and preserving antiquities”.
Kiwan pointed out the importance of these courses in rehabilitating the graduates of the Archeology Department from a practical point of view and supplying the restoration workshops in the technical laboratory with a new technical cadre capable of restoring and preserving pottery artifacts.
He added that the national excavation missions depend mainly on the technical aspect related to the restoration of pottery and finds which were discovered in the archaeological excavation sites to become suitable for display in its original form that is consistent with its era.
It is noteworthy that the art lab of the Al-Suwayda Antiquities Department has restored more than 600 artifacts since the beginning of this year, dating back to the prehistoric, bronze and Hellenistic periods, in addition to the Nabataean and Roman periods.
