Brussels (ST): The European Commission expressed hope that the EU states would be able to lift the travel restrictions imposed because of the Corona-virus pandemic as soon as possible and open borders among EU states as a prelude to opening external borders.
The Italian News Agency Aki quoted EC vice president Vera Jourova as saying in a press conference that the EU executive body would issue instructions about the aid to be given to the member states to help them re-operate the transport sector before opening their external borders, noting the necessity of salvaging the tourist season.
Jourova stressed that relaunching the tourism and transport system should be well-studied taking into account the situation of the pandemic in every country .
The EC underlined the necessity of equal treatment for citizens and passengers.
Earlier, the EC had estimated losses of the tourism sector in Europe at a rate of 50% as a result of the Corona-virus pandemic.
