Trump suspends WHO funding, Guterres reacts “coronavirus pandemic is not the time for such a move”

US President Donald Trump has announced that he has ordered his administration to suspend US financial contributions to the World Health Organization (WHO) over what he called “mismanagement” of Coronavirus crisis by this international organization.

“Today I am instructing my administration to halt funding of the World Health Organization while a review is conducted to assess the World Health Organization’s role in severely mismanaging and covering up the spread of the coronavirus,” Trump said at a White House press conference late Tuesday.

Reacting to Trump’s decision, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said it was not the time to reduce the resources for the activities of the World Health Organization or any other humanitarian organization in the fight against the virus, pointing out that the WHO is part of the U.N.

According to Reuters, Guterres said that “now is the time for unity and for the international community to work together in solidarity to stop this virus and its shattering consequences.”

Germany as well reiterated the words of Guterres and condemned the Trump administration’s decision to halt funding for the WHO in this time of great need.
