On June 2nd, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that Russia wants written security guarantees from the West because it does not trust the statements of any of the Western leaders.
“Russia demanded at the end of last year written security guarantees because no one can be dependent on any statements from Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky or any of the Western leaders. Their words do not count, and therefore no promises or words can be discussed, especially from Zelensky,” Zakharova said in an interview with Russian broadcaster Vladimir Solovyov.
Zakharova indicated that it is impossible and useless to discuss Zelensky’s promises not to use American Hemars missile launchers to target Russian territory.
US Deputy Defense Secretary Colin Kahl announced yesterday that the new package of US aid to Ukraine includes four Hemars long-range multiple launch missile systems capable of striking targets with a range of up to 80 kilometers.
Kahl claimed that Washington obtained a promise from Zelensky personally not to use these systems to strike targets in Russia.
In turn, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov announced that Moscow views the new package of US aid to Ukraine very negatively.
