Zakharova : The ban of transit goods to the Russian province of Kaliningrad has serious consequences

Moscow, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stressed that the measures taken by Lithuania to ban the transit of goods by rail to the Russian province of Kaliningrad have serious consequences.

“I hope that the Lithuanians have some remnants of professionalism in assessing the situation and they should understand the consequences,” Zakharova told Sputnik News Agency on Tuesday. She added that Lithuania has crossed all limits and this is nothing but crude hostilities.

In the same context, Governor of Kaliningrad Province Anton Alikhanov affirmed earlier that the ban on Lithuania’s transit of some goods into the province is illegal and does not comply with the provisions of Lithuania’s accession to the European Union.

The Russian Foreign Ministry had recently summoned the Chargé Affairs of Lithuania in Moscow and confirmed that if the transit of goods to the Kaliningrad region is not fully restored in the near future, Russia reserves the right to protect its national interests, noting that the provocative measures taken by the Lithuanian side are openly hostile.

Lithuania last week stopped the transit of goods under European sanctions to Kaliningrad.
