Zakharova: OPCW’s report on Syria biased, politicized, inaccurate

Russia has stressed that the report of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) on the alleged use of chemical weapons in Syria is biased and politicized.

In a statement on Friday, Zakharova said that the organization should not remain hostage to the western states which seek imposing their own agenda, warning that if these countries’ activities are not stopped, the OPCW could find itself completely paralyzed.

The Russian diplomat clarified that the western countries worked actively during the session of the OPCW Executive Council held between July 7 and 9 to adopt the first report of  the OPCW’s Investigation and Identification Team (IIT) which claimed that the Syrian Arab Army  allegedly used chemical weapons against civilians in the Syrian city of Latamenah in 2017.

” Basing on evidence, we informed the OPCW that the report turned out to be biased, politically motivated, inaccurate, weak from a professional point of view and technically unconvincing,” Zakharova stressed.

She reiterated that the IIT was created upon an initiative by  a US-led group as an illegitimate mechanism, where Western countries dominate, and that runs counter to the provisions of the Chemical Convention and seeks a geopolitical goal aiming at undermining the positions of the Syrian government .

Zakharova added that the activity of the IIT interferes in the exclusive authority of the UN Security Council.
