Young engineers design an electronic system protecting cyclists from traffic accidents

Due to the fact that many young people have adopted electric bicycles as a means of transportation that saves time and cost, and in order to protect them from traffic accidents, young engineers have designed an electronic bike-connected protection system.

The idea of the design is to reduce the failure of car drivers to notice bicycles coming from behind or when overtaking them as a result of the inability of drivers to predict the path of the bike before turning right or left.

The engineers noted that the tested system is simple, easy to use and can be handled by all cyclists and it has low manufacturing costs.

The design work mechanism is based on a microcontroller chip “Arduino Nano” that is connected with a speed and acceleration sensor, analyzes the signals generated by the sensor to turn on the light indicators located on the right and left of the bike to alert the drivers behind when cornering.

They added: the design contains ultrasonic sensors on the rear section of the bike, connecting with the microcontroller chip to generate an alarm bell on both sides of the helmet to alert the cyclist of the coming cars behind him, find out where the vehicle is coming from and identify its destination to avoid when cornering, in order to mitigate traffic accidents as much as possible.

The designers of this system are engineers: Rahaf Al-Mashhour, Rita Alam, Dana Al-Haffar, Rami Shadid, graduates of electronics and Communications Engineering at Damascus University.
