Brussels (ST): The World Health Organization has announced that at least 1,700 people have died from the current heat wave in Spain and Portugal.
Hans Kleugi, head of the WHO’s European office, in a statement today, according to RIA Novosti said:”This year, we have witnessed 1,700 deaths during the heat wave in Spain and Portugal only.”
Kleoghi expressed his concern that forest fires are currently occurring even in the north, especially in Scandinavia, noting that forest fires have destroyed 41 homes in London this week.
A number of European countries are suffering recently from a severe heat wave, and a spokesman for the World Meteorological Organization, Robert Stefansky, said that the temperature in Europe would remain high until the middle of next week.
