ST. PETERSBURG, (ST)- Speaker of the People’s Assembly (PA) Hammouda Sabbagh has stressed that all countries of the world need to join efforts as to fight takfiri terrorist forces that target all who differ with them ideologically, religiously or ethnically.
Speaking at the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) 137th Assembly in St. Petersburg on yesterday, Sabbagh said the Takfiri terrorism to which Syria and Iraq are being exposed provides clear evidence on the need for joining efforts to face the danger of such terrorism which is based on a blind ideology and extremist thinking that rejects others’ ideas and allow killing.
He urged participating parliamentary delegations to play an influential role in the process of cultural, ideological and political confrontation against terrorism, to work together as to put an end to the financing and arming of terrorists and to issue necessary laws in this regard and apply relevant UN resolutions.
Sabbagh stressed the need for spreading the culture of amity, tolerance and peace among peoples, pointing out that all the international agreements that aim at boosting dialogue among nations, religions and respect are in a real test.
Sabbagh affirmed that protecting cultural diversity, enhancing citizenship and maintaining equality in societies have been a priority for Syria and a source of richness and strength for all the countries which are being exposed to cultural genocide.
The PA speaker referred to the constitutional and legislative reforms made in Syria according to democracy standards, noting that these reforms have been made in parallel with the country’s war on terrorist takfiri groups.
On the sidelines of the IPU’s Assembly, Sabbagh met Speaker of the Iranian Shoura Council Ali Larijani and talked with him on strategic ties between Syria and Iran.
Sabbagh condemned the remarks made by US President Donald Trump’s against Iran, describing them as far from reality but not strange as they were made by the United States which is known of adopting a double standards policy aiming to sponsor the Israeli terrorism and interests in the region.
On his part, Larijani said that the role of the Israeli entity and the Saudi regime is represented in creating crises in the region.
The PA Speaker also held a meeting with deputy Speaker of the North Korean parliament Tong Chun during which the two sides talked about the deeply rooted relations between Syria and North Korea and about the need to coordinate stances in the face of common threats facing the two countries.
Chun renewed his country’s support for Syria in the confrontation of aggression and in defense of its sovereignty and dignity, pointing out that Syria’s steadfastness has led to successive victories achieved by the Syrian army against terrorism.
