Women Consultative Council Urges All Parties to Make Syria’s Political Process a Success

GENEVA, (ST)-Women Consultative Council in the Geneva Intra-Syrian talks has urged all parties to exert more efforts as to make the political process leading to a peaceful settlement in Syria a success.

In a joint press conference with the UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura yesterday in Geneva, members of the council said the Women Consultative Council was formed under the request of the Syrian women who believe that they should play an effective role in the political process and in drawing up the future of Syria.

The Council comprises 12 Syrian women of different political backgrounds and from different parts of Syria.

Members of the Council reiterated their call for the immediate lifting of the unjust economic sanctions that have been targeting the Syrians’ living.

They expressed their support for de Mistura’s efforts to proceed in the political process based on common principles, pointing out that despite differences on some points “it is possible to reach a consensus on the political process s to save the country from the current crisis and build a unified safe Syria based on the right of equal citizenship for all the Syrians.”

Humanitarian issues as well as making the cessation of hostilities agreement a success are the top priorities of the council, according to the members.

Diana Jabbour, a council member, said “we believe that women can provide an atmosphere of compatibility within which political considerations can be ignored in the service of the hoped-for Syria.

On his part, de Mistura urged empowering Syrian women to have a major role in Syria’s future.
