With the participation of Syria, The work of the COP28 Conference continues in Dubai

Dubai (ST) – The Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC (COP28) continues in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

With the participation of the Syrian technical delegation, a high-level meeting was held within the conference’s activities on the just energy transition to avoid devastating environmental impacts.

Deputy Minister of Water Resources Jihad Kanaan indicated that there are many countries that suffer from sanctions that prevent them from accessing the funds’ resources, so that they can achieve their goals in reducing climate impacts.

He stressed the need to work to lift these sanctions and provide all countries with the opportunity to access the funds’ resources, so that they can implement their environmental obligations in all fields, including the just energy transition.

The National Coordinator of the Framework Convention on Climate Change, Engineer Khaled Jabour, also attended a technical meeting to discuss the outcomes of the first global inventory report seven years after the launch of the Paris Agreement. This past dealt with means of implementation, and the majority of countries presented interventions and opinions on the topic of financing, and reserved the necessary funding to be in line with means of implementation.

These means include financing funds, capacity building and technology transfer, as the report showed a large financial gap between funding and needs.

It is noteworthy that Syria, during its participation in the Climate Action Summit held in Dubai, joined the UAE Declaration on Resilient Food Systems, Sustainable Agriculture and Climate Action, in addition to the Global Pledge for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency, the Global Cooling Pledge, and the Climate and Health Declaration.
