With the participation of Syria, the 112th session of the Arab Economic and Social Council begins in Cairo

The activities of the 112th regular session of the Arab Economic and Social Council kickstarted today in Cairo at the ministerial level, with the participation of Syria, represented by Dr. Muhammad Samer Al-Khalil, Minister of Economy and Foreign Trade.
In his speech during the session, Minister Al-Khalil appreciated all the efforts made in preparation for the meetings of the Economic and Social Council at its current session, including the topics proposed to be included in the draft agenda of the fifth session of the Arab Development Summit scheduled to be held in Mauritania next November.
Al-Khalil pointed out that the proposed topic on the meeting’s agenda regarding updating the standards for presenting economic and social issues to the Council of the League of Arab States at the summit level is one of the important issues that would contribute to developing the work mechanism at the technical level and at the level of the goals desired to be achieved.
Al-Khalil stated that it is not possible to achieve the desired level of development in light of the continuing food crisis and its negative repercussions on many countries, as it has sometimes reached the level of threatening food security for citizens in countries that were considered food secure, which requires us to strengthen economic integration to reach the level of optimizing the investment of available resources.
The Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, said in his speech at the opening of the session: The Arab Economic and Social Council has been able to achieve solid Arab achievements that have set bright marks in the process of joint Arab action. He added: This Council, in accordance with the provisions of its bylaws, has assumed the responsibility of managing all economic and social files for joint Arab action.
Aboul Gheit explained that the crises that our Arab region and the entire world went through during the past few years produced exceptional circumstances that we are still living under and from which we are drawing lessons.
The Secretary-General of the Arab League said: The timing of this council is of particular importance as it comes shortly before the fifth session of the Arab Economic and Social Development Summit, which will be hosted by Mauritania next November.
