With the participation of nine Arab countries, the Arab Railway Union conference opened in Damascus

Damascus: With the participation of nine Arab countries, the extraordinary session of the meetings of the Board of Directors of the Arab Railway Union in its 38th session and its 35th General Assembly started in the conference hall of the Caesar Palace Hotel in Damascus, after an 11-year pause.

In his speech at the opening ceremony the Minister of Transport, Engineer Zuhair Khuzaym, affirmed that the Arab countries were the support for Syria in the days of adversity and in the days of difficulties, pointing out that Syria has been at the forefront since the establishment of the Union in developing the railway sector for its great contributions to the movement of transport and trade exchange.

Khuzaym referred to the destruction and sabotage that befell the railway sector in Syria due to the terrorist war that was waged against it, unilateral measures and the suffocating blockade, and the resulting sabotage of about eighty percent of the railway network, referring to the role of the workers, cadres and expertise of the Ministry of Transport in restarting parts of the network.

Khuzaym underlined the importance of the conference as a prelude to a promising start in its role and contribution within the institutions of the Arab League, stressing the readiness of Syria, represented by the Ministry, to provide all support and cooperation for any effort that serves the work of the Union, in a way that reflects positively on our Arab peoples and countries.

Secretary General of the Council of Arab Economic Unity in the League of Arab States, Ambassador Mohammadi Ahmed Al-Nani, praised in his speech the amendments and procedures included in the new investment law in Syria and its role in attracting Arab and foreign investors.

Al-Nani indicated that there is a plan for the Council with the Syrian government to help the economy in all fields, especially those related to investment, trade and transportation, in addition to trying to draw an investment map for priority projects for Syria and participate in reconstruction and financing projects with the concerned authorities.
