Damascus (ST): With the participation of 48 beekeepers from different governorates, the activities of the Fourth Syrian Honey Festival, which is held by the Syrian branch of the Arab Beekeepers Union in Tishreen Sports City in Damascus, were launched yesterday.
The festival, which will last until the 3rd of next month, aims to introduce bee products, their types, and the latest requirements for beekeeping and honey production, as well as providing an opportunity for beekeepers to sell directly to festival visitors.
The Minister of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform, Eng. Muhammad Hassan Qatana, indicated in a statement to reporters that the festival was distinguished by the presence of new models of beehives that enable beekeepers to obtain the best conditions for beekeeping, pointing out that honey production for this year reached about 2000 tons, while it was before the terrorist war on Syria more than 3000 tons.
Qatana pointed out that the foreign market is now being restored for the export of Syrian honey, as a number of measures have been taken to preserve the position of Syrian honey in foreign markets, including the adoption of a laboratory to analyze honey and prevent its export except after placing a label of a certificate of origin, indicating that beekeepers have been allocated quantities of Subsidized fuel, and they will soon be given an electronic card for that.
The head of the branch of the Arab Beekeepers Union in Syria, Eng. Iyad Daaboul, underlined the importance of the festival to support beekeepers in the field of marketing, which is part of the sustainability of the production process, pointing out that during the last season, tens of tons were exported to a number of countries, including the UAE, Iraq and Lebanon.
