With Syria’s participation, seminar of UN Decolonization Committee is held in Venezuela

The seminar, organized by the United Nations Decolonization Committee, was held in the Venezuelan capital, Caracas, with the participation of more than 50 countries, including Syria, which holds the position of rapporteur of the committee, represented by the Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Qusay al-Dahhak.

In a video speech, UN Secretary-General AntónioGuterres and Venezuelan Vice President DelcyRodriguez stressed the importance of the committee’s work to decolonize and support the 17 non-self-governing territories recognized by the United Nations.

In turn, Ambassador Al-Dahhak noted that the seminar aims to enable the committee to obtain the opinions of representatives of these regions and listen to experts and the positions of countries and concerned parties. This would contribute to support the committee in determining the policies and practical methods that can be followed in the decolonization process and to conduct a realistic analysis and evaluation of the situation in the aforementioned regions to enhance assistance programs provided to those regions.

Al-Dahhak stressed Syria’s rejection of colonialism in all its forms and manifestations as well as its firm commitment in its national capacity and as rapporteur of the Decolonization Committee to support the mandate of the Committee. He also voiced Syria’s aspiration for the Fourth International Decade of Decolonization to be the last decade.

It is noteworthy that this seminar is held annually, alternating between the Caribbean and Pacific regions, within the framework of the United Nations action plan for the Fourth International Decade of Decolonization.
