Wild herbs are food for people in northern Gaza Strip

“We eat wild herbs and what remains of animal fodder in order to survive after the flour and food supplies ran out a long time ago, and despite the ongoing Israeli aggression and siege, we are steadfast and the occupation will not be able to break our will.” With these words, Mahmoud Hamad, a resident of the city of Beit Hanoun describes the living condition of tens of thousands of Gaza Strip Palestinians who are exhausted by hunger and thirst.
Hamad stated that the people of Gaza Strip live on wild herbs and have re-grinned animal fodder in order to feed their children. There are no foodstuffs for the fourth month in a row. Many children, women and the elderly have died of hunger and disease as a result of the Israeli occupation’s siege.
For his part, Ihab Al-Basiouni from the northern Gaza Strip narrates the tragedy of the people there by saying: We search under the rubble of destroyed homes for what remains of food. The people in northern Gaza Strip cannot find a piece of bread for their children, even the infant formula ran out months ago. Whoever did not die from the occupation’s bombing was killed by hunger and thirst. Many infants died due to the lack of milk, as the occupation continued to prevent the entry of aid.
UNRWA confirms that the Israeli occupation forces targeted aid convoys that were on their way to those besieged in northern Gaza Strip more than once, and that the last aid convoy that UNRWA was able to deliver was two months ago.
In turn, Muhammad Abu Jarad from the city of Beit Lahia points out that the people in northern Gaza Strip are suffering from real famine, as their food is limited to wild herbs after the occupation destroyed agricultural fields during the ongoing aggression for the 135th day. The residents also grind what is left of the rice in order to feed their infants and the newly born.
Saadi Al-Zaanin explained that the occupation destroyed all necessities of life in the northern Gaza Strip and deliberately destroyed markets and shops, including food supplies, in order to starve the people. The Israeli occupation further destroyed pharmacies and clinics as well as homes in the entire cities of Beit Hanoun, Beit Lahia and Jabalia, while the international community stood by and watched the humanitarian catastrophe. .
According to Palestinian estimates, hundreds of thousands in northern Gaza Strip, especially in UNRWA shelters, do not have access to food, water or services, in the light of the occupation’s continued prevention of the entry of aid and its refusal to allow international organizations and institutions to facilitate the entry of food stuff and aid.
The matter does not stop in northern Gaza Strip, as Gaza City is also experiencing a humanitarian catastrophe and famine in the light of the occupation’s continued bombing, which has destroyed most of the city’s facilities. Water wells have also stopped due to running out of fuel months ago, which requires urgent international intervention to save those trapped amid hungry and thirst.
