WHO voices its grave concern over polio case in the Gaza Strip

OCCUPIED AL-QUDS, Aug.24, (ST)-The World Health Organization (WHO) has voiced its grave concern following the confirmation of a polio case in a 10-month-old infant in Deir al-Balah, Gaza. This marks the first reported case of polio in Gaza in 25 years.

In a press statement issued today, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of WHO, said WHO and partners have acted swiftly to collect samples from the infant and sent them to an accredited laboratory in the region. The genetic sequencing confirmed that the virus is linked to the type 2 poliovirus variant detected in sewage samples from Gaza in June.

Tedros detailed that the infant, who is currently in stable condition, has suffered paralysis in the lower part of his left leg. He emphasized the heightened risk of the virus spreading in Gaza and the broader region, noting the critical need for immediate action.

In response to this concerning development, the Palestinian Ministry of Health, along with WHO and UNICEF, is mobilizing efforts to launch two rounds of polio vaccination campaigns over the coming weeks. The goal is to halt the transmission of the virus and prevent further cases.
